Back with another article, I’ve been off for five days. In this article, I will share how I hit 13k views for the first time and what I’ve learned from it. You can check out my previous articles on the topic of growing on Medium. This article will be quite different.

Now straight to the point, large views don’t come naturally on Medium. Unlike Quora, Medium doesn’t distribute your article unless it is already popular. So it’s tedious for new writers. If you are new, you need to be stoic. In the beginning, you will hardly receive reads, claps, let alone responses, or followers.

The same case was with me when I join on Medium. I started on Medium as a reader but got interested in writing. Then I read a lot of articles on Medium and took a lot of ideas and tried to publish articles on Medium. The result was disheartening. It’s different from what I was expecting it to be like Quora. 4–5 views, 0 claps, 0 responses, 2–3 followers, and so on. Then, I joined Medium groups on Facebook. There I began to interact with a lot of writers who shared their articles. I also shared a lot. That’s how it started.

What does it take to hit 13k views?

I feel like there’s something sort of luck within this. Of course, it depends on a lot of factors. For like, the quality of the article, the number of readers you target, followers, and many more factors play to get views.

Many of my articles are below 100 views. That’s normal for Medium. While I have 3 out of 85 articles that crossed 1k views. The highest with 7.2k views. And I have dozens of articles that have over 100 views.

Now when you look at these stats, it seems like some of my articles got randomly boosted. There are a lot of factors behind it and I shall discuss a few of them here —

  • In-Situ Engagement: In-Situ Engagement means engaging within your profile or article. When readers engaged with your articles more often then there is a high chance that your articles will get viral. If readers are responding to your article, then never avoid to response them. The more you engage with them the more it will get popular. Cause engagement has something to do with Medium’s articles distribution algorithm.
  • Ex-Situ Engagement: Ex-Situ Engagement means engaging with others outside your profile or articles. You can clap for other articles, provide feedback for them, and engage with their articles. They will most probably check you back.
  • Quality: I think the quality has some role to play when it comes to popular articles. I’m not talking about properly written or grammar-error-free articles. Yes, that also counts in. The heftier reason is the value it provides to the readers. Cause I found it by myself. The more values it provides to readers the more they will interact with your article. Claps, responses, highlights, readings, and readers adding your articles to their reading list are nothing but a reflection of the values your articles provide them.
  • Headline: It also plays a big role. The first impression comes from the headline. A lot of readers will miss your article if the headline isn’t good to attract them.

Now, these are some important factors. Other important factors are the topic used within your articles and the niche. Some topics might have fewer followers while some have bigger audiences. It all affects more or less.

When it comes to followers I would say, the popularity of your article is proportional to the increase in your followers. That’s also a proven fact. I’ve received a lot of followers this month. And it has a direct connection with the popularity of my article. One of my articles, the article which received 7.2k views, got popular this month. As a result, I got over 500+ new followers this month.
